While walking through the woods, I stumbled across an old gravestone—and nearly collapsed when I saw my childhood picture on it. What I discovered next changed everything I thought I knew about my past.

When Travis moves his family to a quiet town in Maine, he hopes for a fresh start. But three weeks in, a simple mushroom-hunting trip turns into something far darker. His dog runs ahead, his son disappears for a moment, and when Travis finally finds him, Ryan is crouched in front of an old headstone hidden deep in the woods — a headstone with Travis’s childhood photo on it.

The date under the picture is his birthday.

Shaken, Travis begins searching for answers. He learns from his wife that his adoption story was always unclear — he’d been found outside a burning house as a child with only a note pinned to his shirt. At the library, an elderly local named Clara tells him the truth: his birth family lived in a cabin that burned down decades ago. His parents died in the fire… and he had a twin brother, Caleb, who was believed to have died too.

Clara shows him an old newspaper clipping and confirms the photo on the grave was taken by Travis’s real father. She also reveals that his uncle, Tom, set the headstones because the town was never certain whether one of the boys had survived.

When Travis meets Tom, the man recognizes him immediately. He confesses he always believed one twin might have escaped the fire — and he hoped placing the headstone would someday bring that child home.

A week later, Travis returns to the clearing with his family and Tom. He kneels at the grave and lays a memento for the brother he never got to grow up with.

“Dad, are we visiting your brother?” Ryan asks.
“Yes,” Travis says softly. “His name was Caleb.”

The wind moves through the trees as Travis wonders if Tom was the one who left the note that saved his life all those years ago.
