Grady Demond Wilson, widely recognized for his role as Lamont Sanford on NBC’s classic sitcom Sanford and Son, has passed away at the age of 79. His portrayal of Fred Sanford’s responsible and loyal son made him a lasting favorite with television audiences.
Wilson’s death was confirmed by his son, Demond Wilson Jr., who said the actor died Friday morning at his home in Palm Springs. The cause was complications from cancer, though no further details were shared.
“He was a wonderful man, and I loved him deeply,” his son said, honoring a father whose impact reached far beyond his on-screen work.
Born on October 13, 1946, in Valdosta, Georgia, Wilson grew up in New York City, where his interest in acting took shape early. Before pursuing entertainment, he served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, was injured in combat, and later honorably discharged.
After returning home, he studied at the American Drama Studio in New York. His breakthrough came in 1972 when he was cast alongside Redd Foxx in Sanford and Son.
Wilson’s dynamic with Foxx became the foundation of the show’s success, helping it become one of the most popular sitcoms of the 1970s. He stayed with the series until it ended in 1977 and later appeared in its short-lived revival.
Following the show, Wilson continued appearing on television, with roles on The Love Boat, Fantasy Island, The New Odd Couple, and Girlfriends. Eventually, he stepped away from acting to focus on other pursuits.
In the 1980s, Wilson embraced Christianity, became a minister, founded a church in Southern California, and wrote several books exploring faith, fame, and personal challenges. He leaves behind a legacy defined by perseverance, sincerity, and enduring cultural influence.
