The Secret of the Sandwich Man

Paul was a quiet employee who brought the same simple sandwich to work every day. Although some coworkers teased him about it, he never reacted. After Paul left his job, a coworker helping him clear his desk found children’s drawings and thank-you notes showing him giving sandwiches to kids.

Wanting to understand more, the coworker visited Paul at the West End Library. There, he saw Paul handing out homemade lunches to children in need. Paul explained that he had grown up in foster care and often experienced hunger. Preparing sandwiches was his way of giving back and making sure other children did not suffer as he had.

Paul’s kindness inspired the coworker to help with making and distributing the meals. When Paul became exhausted and collapsed, the coworker continued the work until he recovered. Soon, other employees joined in, creating a weekly tradition called “Sandwich Fridays.”

After recovering, Paul chose not to return to his former job. Instead, he started a nonprofit organization called One Meal Ahead, based on advice from his foster father to always stay “one meal ahead of the worst day.” His efforts helped many children and encouraged others to show kindness and compassion.

Paul’s story reminds us that true heroes are often ordinary people whose small, caring actions make a lasting difference.
