Why your pet keeps taking your spot—and what it actually means

If you’ve ever entered a room and found your dog lying in your chair or your cat sprawled across your pillow, you’ve seen a very common behavior. It may seem like they’re claiming your space, but it usually just means your spot is the most comfortable one available.

One major reason is comfort. Dogs and cats are naturally attracted to warm, soft places, and your furniture often retains your body heat, making it especially appealing. To them, a recently used seat or bed is an ideal place to relax, particularly when it’s cooler.

Safety also plays a role. Animals prefer spots where they feel secure while resting. Dogs often stay close to their owners or choose enclosed areas, while cats may pick higher surfaces like couches or pillows so they can rest while still keeping an eye on their surroundings.

Another key factor is scent. Pets are strongly guided by smell, and your belongings carry your familiar scent, which provides reassurance. For dogs, this strengthens their bond with you, while cats also find comfort in familiar odors. Overall, this behavior is less about dominance and more about comfort, security, and connection.
