Ivanka Trump had one of the most prominent roles during her father Donald Trump’s first presidency. From the beginning of his administration in 2017, she acted as a senior adviser and close confidante, frequently appearing alongside him during major political events, international meetings, and policy discussions. Although she promoted programs focused on women’s economic opportunities and workforce development, her involvement in the administration also attracted widespread criticism. Many former friends and critics believed she failed to challenge or moderate some of her father’s most controversial decisions and rhetoric.
Her political role significantly affected her private life and social relationships. Several long-standing friendships reportedly ended after the 2016 election. Among them was her friendship with Chelsea Clinton, which faded amid growing political divisions. Clinton later indicated that she could not maintain close ties with someone actively supporting the Trump administration. Similar reactions from others in Ivanka’s social circle reportedly left her feeling isolated and disappointed.
The controversy also damaged her business interests. Major retailers such as Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, and Burlington eventually removed Ivanka Trump-branded products from their stores. Facing mounting backlash and increasing difficulty separating her fashion label from the political climate surrounding her father, Ivanka ultimately closed her company altogether.
Inside the White House, tensions reportedly existed between Ivanka, Jared Kushner, and other administration staff members. Former Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham later described the couple critically in her memoir, alleging they behaved as though they held royal status within the administration. She recalled incidents during official foreign visits, including claims that the pair attempted to join exclusive diplomatic meetings outside established protocol. Grisham also stated that some staff members privately referred to Kushner as the “Slim Reaper” because of his tendency to involve himself in major projects before distancing himself when controversies emerged.
After leaving Washington in 2021, Ivanka publicly distanced herself from politics. As Donald Trump prepared another presidential campaign, she announced that she would not participate and instead wanted to focus on her family life in Florida. According to people close to the family, she believed her children were entering important years of adolescence and did not want political life to dominate their upbringing.
Despite stepping away publicly, questions about her relationship with her father’s political movement continued. Reports later published by author Michael Wolff described tensions behind the scenes following the October 7 attacks in Israel. According to those accounts, Trump campaign officials were concerned about renewed scrutiny over past remarks critics considered antisemitic. The campaign reportedly hoped Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, both Jewish, would publicly defend Donald Trump against such accusations.
However, according to the book, Ivanka and Kushner declined to issue a formal statement on his behalf. Kushner allegedly made it clear they did not want to involve themselves in another political controversy. Their refusal was viewed by some observers as evidence that, although Ivanka remained personally loyal to her father, she no longer wished to act as a political defender for his campaigns or sacrifice the more private life she had chosen after leaving the White House.
