The photographer asked everyone to take off their shoes for beach ceremony pictures.
My stomach dropped instantly. I had spent the last three years hiding my toes.
“Grandma, why do your toenails look like that?” my 6-year-old grandson asked loudly.
Suddenly, everyone looked over — the bridesmaids, the groomsmen, and even my daughter’s new in-laws.
I wanted to vanish into the sand.
My toenails had become thick, yellowish-brown, and brittle around the edges. My big toenails were so damaged that wearing closed-toe shoes had become uncomfortable.
