A German tourist has died after falling roughly 230 feet from a ski lift following a collision at a resort in northern Montenegro.
The accident happened on Sunday, Dec. 21, at the Savin Kuk ski resort near Žabljak in the Durmitor Mountains. According to European media reports cited by People, two chairlifts collided when one basket slipped and struck another.
The victim, a 34-year-old man from Germany, fell from the lift and died at the scene. His wife, a 30-year-old German woman who was seated next to him, was seriously injured and taken to a hospital with a broken femur and a head injury.
Authorities shut down the ski lift to investigate the cause of the crash. Several other tourists were left stranded for hours before being safely evacuated in difficult weather conditions.
Officials have not released the victims’ names, and the cause of the collision remains under investigation. Local leaders have called for a full and transparent inquiry into the incident.
