A Man Tries to Take His Brother’s Home After Their Mother Pushes Him

My older stepbrother tried to cheat me out of my inheritance, but it backfired—and karma handled the rest.

I’m Joan. I have a half-brother, Jack, from my father’s previous relationship. We were never close, mostly because his mother openly disliked me. After my father died, my mother and I were the ones who cared for his elderly mother—my grandmother—while Jack stayed uninvolved.

Later, I moved abroad to study and eventually settled there. When my mother passed away, my grandmother was 90 and needed help, so I asked Jack, who lived nearby, to check on her. I also sent him money every month for food and cleaning. He agreed, but his effort was minimal, and I later discovered he’d been keeping most of the money for himself.

When travel restrictions lifted, I rushed home and found my grandmother neglected and her house filthy. That’s when I realized Jack had barely been visiting her at all. Soon after, he abruptly told me he was “done” helping and then cut off all contact.

I later learned the truth: Jack only helped because he hoped to inherit my grandmother’s house. What he didn’t know was that she had written her will years earlier, leaving the house to me—because my mother and I had never owned one, while Jack and his mother already had homes. When they failed to pressure her into changing it, his mother turned him against me completely.

Not long after, karma struck. Jack lost all his money due to a gambling addiction, his wife left him, and even his mother refused to take him in. Now he’s couch-surfing, with nothing to show for his greed.

That’s when I stopped doubting karma—and started trusting it.
